Tips for Allergies

1. Know Your Triggers

The first step is figuring out what allergens trigger the miserable allergy symptoms your family has to deal with. Different responses may be required for bad reactions to indoor and outdoor allergens. If the trigger is inside, opening the windows to air out the house is an important step to take. This may be a variety of causes, perhaps pet hair, dust, or mold. However, if the trigger is from an outdoor allergen like grass or tree pollen, keep your windows closed.

2. Get Rid of Standing Water Sources

Mold growth is common in areas with standing water sources, making it hazardous to your health. Get rid of these sources, whenever possible, to reduce the risk of mold development.

3. Trap the Dust - Don’t Move it Around

Feather dusters are common in many homes, but they tend to just lift the dust from the surface and distribute it in the air. Instead, use a dryer sheet, a damp cloth or paper towel to trap the dust for complete removal. Using a dryer sheet will also reduce static and remove dust mites.

4. Avoid Strong or Scented Chemicals

Strong cleaning agents can actually make the symptoms of allergies worse. Try gentler cleaning products instead, for example baking soda, to ease the negative consequences of harsh cleaning agents.

5. Clear Dust from ALL Surfaces

The best results can be reached when you dust absolutely every surface in your home. Some examples of frequently forgotten areas are: window frames, door frames, ceiling fans, and windowsills.

6. Keep the House Cool and Dry

50% relative humidity, or lower, is recommended for optimal results in the home. A cool, dry home creates a less habitable environment for dust mite and mold spore growth than a warm, damp environment.

7. Wash or Replace Moldy Shower Curtains

Slimy, moldy shower curtains can be a huge concern for those with allergies, and they may not even realize it as the source of the problem. The mold from the shower can spread to other parts of the home. This process is made even easier in the warmer months.

8. Remove Trapped Allergens

Symptoms of allergies may be triggered by the allergens that are trapped in the carpet, rugs, and upholstery items in the home. They act as an air filter and should be vacuumed weekly. Professionally cleaning them every three to four months is recommended. Palm Breeze Chem-Dry is a great option for home with allergy sufferers. Not only is our main cleaning solution certified green, but we have a home health study to prove that our product improves living conditions.

9. Wash and Air Out Bed Linens Regularly

It is recommended to wash bed linens every one to two weeks. Sweat, dust, and flakes of skin are among the debris accumulated on bedding. It makes for a perfect environment for dust mites.

10. Change HVAC Filters Regularly

It is recommended to change the filters in the home every 6-12 months. Homes with pets or allergies should change their filters more frequently. It may come as a surprise, but the highest MERV rating is not necessarily the best option. The reduction in airflow that the high ratings may cause can actually make things worse. Most homes use filters rated between MERV 7-12.
